Aqaba Route

A diving safari north of the Sinai Peninsula in the Gulf of Aqaba is an incredible experience, renowned for its diverse marine life, vibrant coral reefs, and historical sites. This region includes popular dive spots like Ras Mohamed, Tiran Island, and the Straits of Tiran, each offering a unique underwater environment and beautiful topography.

1. Coral Reefs and Marine Life

• Coral Gardens: The reefs in this area are pristine, with stunning hard and soft corals that attract a diverse range of marine life. You can expect vivid colors and healthy coral formations, ideal for underwater photography.
• Fish Species: There are chances to see schools of jacks, barracuda, and fusiliers, along with more elusive species like Napoleon wrasse, hawksbill turtles, and even the occasional hammerhead or other shark varieties.

2. Key Dive Sites

• Straits of Tiran: Located at the entrance of the Gulf, this area has four main reefs (Jackson, Woodhouse, Thomas, and Gordon). Known for their strong currents, these sites are ideal for drift diving. They’re often teeming with large fish like tuna and barracuda.
• Ras Mohamed National Park: This marine reserve, at the tip of the Sinai, is famous for the Shark and Yolanda reefs. Divers will find a variety of coral species and an abundance of reef fish. The Yolanda Reef, in particular, is famous for its shipwreck debris, including toilets and bathtubs from the Yolanda wreck.
• Dahab Sites: The Blue Hole and the Canyon are legendary dive sites. The Blue Hole is famous for its challenging arch and incredible depth, while the Canyon offers a unique experience diving within a crevasse in the reef.

3. Historical Wrecks

• There are several wrecks in the Gulf of Aqaba and surrounding areas, including the SS Thistlegorm, which, though located south of the typical route, is often included in extended safari trips. It’s considered one of the most interesting wreck dives in the world, with wartime cargo and historical significance.

4. Diving Conditions

• Visibility: Visibility is generally excellent, often ranging from 20-40 meters, providing crystal-clear views of marine life and reefs.
• Water Temperature: The Gulf of Aqaba generally offers warm waters, ranging from 21°C in winter to 28°C in summer, making it diveable year-round.
• Currents: Some areas, particularly around Tiran, have strong currents. These drift dives are exhilarating and provide a chance to see large pelagics but require good diving experience.

5. Diving Safari Experience

• A liveaboard safari allows divers to maximize their time underwater, often with up to four dives a day, including night dives.
