Autumn Diving in the Red Sea — Why Fall Is a Prime Time

As the calendar turns to autumn, the Red Sea region around Sharm El Sheikh takes on a special magic for scuba enthusiasts. The water remains warm, the crowds lighten, and marine life becomes especially active. Here’s a look at what makes autumn diving here so compelling:

1. Ideal Conditions

  • Water temperature: In autumn the sea still holds the heat of summer, often around the mid-to-high 20 °C, which means a comfortable dive with less heavy exposure gear required.

  • Visibility: With the winds often settling down and fewer storms, clarity is excellent — you can expect visibility of 20-30 m or more on many days.

  • Marine life activity: Autumn often brings an uptick in fish movement, coral spawning (depending on spot) and active reef patterns. Fewer snorkel crowds also mean less disturbance, giving divers more intimate encounters.

  • Better logistics: With the main peak tourist surge over, the dive boats, centres and resorts often have more flexibility — smaller groups, earlier launch times, more focused guiding.

2. Red Sea Underwater Highlights in Autumn

Beneath the surface, the Red Sea delivers a rich palette of marine experiences:

  • Colourful coral gardens: Hard and soft corals are vibrant, from plate corals to gorgonians, illuminated in the rich autumn light penetrating the water.

  • Walls, drop-offs and drift dives: The geology here offers sheer walls and streaming dives; autumn’s mild surface conditions make drift and wall dives particularly enjoyable.

  • Pelagics & reef fauna: Though the big migrations are more typical of other seasons, autumn still brings reef sharks, large barracuda schools, eagle rays, turtles and abundant reef fish.

  • Wrecks and remains: For those certified and keen, the region’s historic wrecks (e.g., WWII era) give a dramatic feel — the cooler water after summer still remains warm enough for relaxed exploration.

  • Night diving magic: Autumn nights are inviting for after-sunset dives. You’ll see the reef in a new light: nocturnal creatures, bioluminescence, sleeping reef fish, and the sea in its quieter hours.
